Taichung, Taiwan’s second biggest city is one of the most popular places to stay for visitors to Taiwan. Located just under one hour away from Taipei by Taiwan High Speed Railway, there are lots of affordable hotels in Taichung (and it is often cheaper to stay at than Taipei).
Located on Taiwan’s west coast, Taichung is becoming increasingly popular with domestic and international tourists with heaps of attractions to suit all budgets and tastes – and we’d also rate its popular student friendly Feng Chia Night Market as one of Taiwan’s best night markets.

Travelling to Taichung, Taipei
As Taichung is Taiwan’s second biggest city (after Taipei) plus one of the most populated places in Taiwan, there are many transport options to get here.
Going to Taichung via Taiwan High Speed Rail (HSR)
You can go to Taichung from Taipei on the Taiwan High Speed Rail train (HSR) which takes around 47 minutes.
You can buy discounted Taiwan High Speed Rail one way tickets between Taipei and HSR Taichung station (plus other stations) via this Klook HSR booking link >

Please note these discounted Taiwan High Speed Rail tickets are exclusive to overseas tourists and you will need to show your passport upon redemption.
Be aware when choosing Taichung accommodation that the HSR station is a little further out of town than the local / TRA Taichung Railway station.
There is also a much cheaper TRA train from Taipei that arrives at Taichung station in downtown Taichung (the HSR station is a little further out of town). The journey takes just over 2 hours.
Taichung by bus
You can take a bus from Taipei to Taichung in two hours for as little as NT$300 one way (prices correct as of April 2025).

If after further research you’d rather just do a day trip from Taipei to Taichung, check out this classic attractions and Gaomei Wetlands >
Booking Taiwan Taichung hotels – top tips
Once you are ready to start booking your Taichung hotel(s), there are a few general rules and tips:
- Peak season in Taiwan is generally classed as the summer months but you’ll also find room rates are likely higher in the winter because of Christmas, Taiwan Lunar New Year and cherry blossom season.
- We find Agoda has the best room rates for Taiwan / Taichung hotels plus booking.com is also quite good.
- Online rates for Taiwan hotels are generally better than booking in person. We even had a situation where we tried to extend a Taichung hotel booking at reception and the staff kindly informed us we should book it on Agoda instead as it would be cheaper!
- If possible, book your Taichung hotel rooms several months in advance as the room rates tend to increase in the months before you arrive. Also consider making use of the ‘cancellable’ room options that some hotel booking sites have like Agoda.

Taichung hotels and accommodation
Here are some highly rated Taichung hotel and accommodation suggestions for all types of budget:
Taichung city center accommodation
Hotel Mi Casa ($)
One of the closest hotels to Taichung Station (TRA) and just a 4 minute walk between them, Hotel Mi Casa has been recommended by travellers in our Taiwan Travel Tips (TTT) Facebook group.
As well as the free breakfast and location (next door to Taroko Mall), it is a short walk to a bus stop that goes to Sun Moon Lake.
The rooms at Hotel Mi Casa are a little on the small side but this is a great place to stay if you will be exploring lots and just want to be near great transport links.
The room rates are also some of the cheapest near the station and many reviews say it is a clean hotel in Taichung.

Taichung Millennium ($$$)
A 5* Taichung hotel with a rooftop swimming pool, this is a great Taichung accommodation choice if you want to have a little luxury doing your stay.
Located in West Taichung near to the Shui-an Temple MRT Station, the rooms are clean and modern with large TVs, mini-bars and are very well appointed (many with Taichung city views).
Whilst the rooftop pool with loungers is one of the main reasons for staying at Taichung Millenium, it also offers free parking if you are driving in Taiwan.

Taichung’s newest 5* hotel, the InterContinental Taichung opened in early 2025 and is one of the most luxurious hotels in the whole of Taichung.

Evergreen Laurel Hotel – Taichung ($$)
Featuring a spa and outdoor pool, Evergreen Laurel Hotel – Taichung is a 5* hotel operated by the owner of EVA Airways.
Whilst an older hotel (over 30 years old), the levels of service are very good and guests enjoy all the leisure facilities here.
Just to note Evergreen Laurel Hotel – Taichung is a little way away from both stations (5km from the TRA Taichung Station and 12km from the HSR station).

Le Méridien Taichung ($$$)
Yes, Taichung has a fair few 5* hotels and Le Méridien Taichung is the closest one to Taichung Station with 22 floors. In fact, many of the rooms overlook the station so this is perfect if you are a Taiwan trainspotter at heart
It is one of the 20 tallest buildings in Taiwan and even if you decide not to stay here, the Pano 20 Bar and Restaurant on the upper floors has stunning panoramic views of Taichung – and yes, it has a rooftop pool, gym and sauna too!

Hotels Near Taichung HSR Station
Shinkansen Hotel Taichung ($$)
Located a 10 minute drive or taxi away from the Taichung HSR station, Shinkansen Hotel Taichung is a home away from home and great if you need to be close to the HSR station.
Travellers rave about the breakfast and nice outdoor areas but some think the area is a little remote and ‘industrial’.

Hotel Hesper HSR Taichung ($)
A 3* Taichung hotel located 7 minutes drive from the HSR Station, this is a cheap but clean place to stay if you have to get an early train or arrive late.
Guests like that it is close to simple conveniences like the 7-Eleven and McDonalds next door but it is a little away from the famous Taichung downtown attractions.

Taichung hotels near Feng Chia Night Market
Hotel 7 in Taichung ($$)
In March 2026, we stayed 4 nights in Hotel 7 逢甲 (Taichung) in a Loft Double Room (33m²).
We primarily picked this hotel because it had a separate lounge and mezzanine bedroom plus it was a very short walk to Feng Chia night market.

The room was split into two – a downstairs area with a lounge, bathroom and storage area then a separate bedroom and desk mezzanine level upstairs. The room had all the usual facilities including a fridge, kettle, sofa, big flatscreen TV and a basic bathroom (dated but perfectly fine).

What we also liked about Taichung Hotel 7 is that they had a rooftop area / terrace with several sofas, free air hockey and table football plus complimentary soft drinks and a coffee machine – the kitchen area also doubled as a ‘gym’ which was a bit weird.

We also really liked that the hotel offered an inexpensive laundry service. Breakfast at Taichung Hotel 7 逢甲 was serviceable but nothing special – plus the breakfast room design was a bit quirky / mad with upside down beds and other fixtures nailed to the walls – it was probably trendy 15 years ago!

MINI HOTELS (Feng Jia Branch) ($$)
Taiwan loves themed things from restaurants to 7-Elevens – so it comes as no surprise Taichung has a fun fantasy themed hotel with lots of selfie spots and European stylings (it is meant to be a bit like Harry Potter).
Guests love the 8th floor common area with free drinks and the breakfast buffet – it is just 300 metres from Feng Chia Night Market, one of the best night markets in Taiwan.

Hostels in Taichung
Star Hostel Taichung Parklane ($)
The highest rated hostel in Taichung on Booking.com at the time of writing, this isn’t the cheapest hostel but it sure is the nicest (and close to the trendy Fantasy Ray Story and Park2 Caowu bar and restaurant complex).
One review we saw even said this is the ‘poshest hostel’ they’d ever been to!
The star of the show has to be the rooftop bar and terrace area atop Star Hostel Taichung Parklane which is stunning at sunset.
Beds in mixed dorms or private ensuite rooms (single, twin, double and triples) are also available.

Backpack 41 Youth Hostel – Taichung ($)
One of the cheapest hostels in Taichung, Backpack 41 Youth Hostel is a short walk from Taichung Station and in the heart of downtown.
There is a big communal area on the first floor with free tea and coffee. Note some of the bathrooms are mixed.
Beds in 10 bed dorms start from as low as £8 a night ($10 USD or NT$350) or double that for smaller dorm rooms.
