Make some Modern Toilet time in Taiwan. Taipei has many unusual things to do including many bizarre, gimmicky and quirky themed restaurants that are popular with young locals and tourists.

You can find eateries with curious themes such as jailhouses, hospitals, airplanes and ninjas – there are even themed 7-Elevens in Taipei.
If you are going to visit one themed restaurant during your visit to Taipei, make sure you do not miss the amazing Modern Toilet Taipei with branches in Ximending and Shilin.

Modern Toilet decoration and interior
During a visit to Taipei, we visited their large 3-story flagship branch, located in the fun and colorful shopping district, Ximending.
The restaurant interior is kitted out like an interior of a bathroom, with wall tiles decorated with poo shaped cartoon characters.

The acrylic toilet seats at Modern Toilet act as dining chairs, with each one uniquely decorated with designs such as flowers, glitter and sea shells.
The glass-topped sinks act as dining tables, and rolls of toilet paper are used instead of napkins.
The interior decor at Taiwan Modern Toilet is such good fun and so bright and colourful – perfect for Instagrammers!

Themed food at Modern Toilet
The food served here is a mix of Italian and Asian cuisine – and surprisingly, it isn’t too crap (although it literally looks like it might be).
There is an English menu available at Modern Toilet Taipei that has photos of the food on (it is always great to find one of these whilst travelling in a non English speaking country!).

We ordered the clam and garlic spaghetti which was part of a set meal that also included a soup starter and an ice cream dessert.
We also ordered a noodle and meat dish which was served in a miniature toilet bowl!

The soup starter dish was served in toilet shaped mugs, whilst the soft serve chocolate flavoured ice cream dessert was presented in a squat toilet shaped plastic bowl.
And the best part? The shape of the ice cream resembled…an …erm…nicely shaped poo…hilarious!

Other items on the menu included Asian curries and hot pots, which are served in mini toilet shaped bowls. The curries are runny and brown, made to resemble….well you know what (it’s so gross!).
The bathtub shaped dishes are used for serving the seafood and pasta gratin meals in (which look a bit less offensive).

Some of the Taipei Modern Toilet desserts are also rather curious like the ‘Urine Clots’ Mango Shaved Ice (served in a urinal) and the ‘constipation black stool chocolate snow shaving'(!) – sounds like a nice dessert to get ‘stuck’ into.

Modern Toilet Restaurant 2024 prices
The food itself is a bit average and the prices are not as cheap as other local eateries – you are paying the extra for the experience.
As of summer 2024, prices at Modern Toilet in Taipei are:
- Themed meals cost between NT$280 and NT$290 (around £7 or $9 USD) for toilet theme dishes such as the Modern Toilet curry pork chop
- Between NT$290 and NT$340 for the bath themed gratin dishes e.g. seafood gratin is NT$340
- NT$100 for ‘swirly poop’ ice-cream or NT$250 for dark chocolate ‘constipation’ ice-cream
We would totally recommend a visit though for the sheer quirkines and for a few funny photos opportunities

On your way out stop by the mini shop to browse poo related souvenirs!
Thanks Modern Toilet – that was a quirky and hilarious night out. We are already looking forward to returning again on our next trip to Taiwan.
