Does Taiwan celebrate Christmas?
Christmas in Taiwan isn’t an official / public holiday but many Christmas events and markets take place, usually starting from mid November until late December.
These are enjoyed by tourists, expats and locals alike and there is a small Christian population in Taiwan (less than 10%).
Just don’t expect any snow in Taiwan at Christmas – unless it is the artificial snow cannon at Taipei Christmasland!

Christmasland in Taipei
15 November 2024 to 1 January 2025
Last year’s Taipei Christmasland (2023) won gold at the New York Design Awards for best pop-up and this year, they’ve returned bigger and better than ever before.
It has won numerous awards including ‘Top 10 Must Visit Christmas Destinations in the World’.
Until 1 January 2025, Taipei Christmasland in Banqiao is one of the top Taiwan events in December organized by the New Taipei City Tourism and Travel Department.
This year, immersive installations and several themed Christmas zones have popped up across Citizen’s Square, Station Plaza, Wanping Park, Circular Line South Plaza, Banqiao Station East Gate and Fuzhong Plaza.
This year, Taipei Christmasland is themed “Magical City,” with lots of fun costumed characters promising to take visitors on a Christmas adventure including an awesome angel, owl, rabbit and unicorn.
There will be an 8 storey LED lit Christmas castle, a massive angel shaped Christmas tree and ‘falling snowflakes’ at City Hall and Station Plaza – so you really can have a white Christmas in Taipei (snow joke)!
Taipei Christmasland 2024 runs until 1 January 2025 and is a free Taipei event in December.

Guguan Light Art Festival
On until 12 January 2025
The 4th annual Lishan Guguan Light Art Festival is now on until 12 January 2025, located in the Lishan Scenic Area located between Hualien and Taichung.
It features one of Taiwan’s tallest Christmas trees (almost 30 meters in height) with winter illuminations at Guguan Park, the Guguan Visitor Center and the local streets. This is set to be one of Taiwan’s most ‘lit’ events in December 2024!

Shilin Residence Chrysanthemum Show, Taipei
Now until 15 December
This ‘blooming’ well must be one of the most colourful Taipei events in December 2024.
Running for over 20 years, the annual Shilin Residence Chrysanthemum Show springs into life every November and December. This year, the event theme is “Chrysanthemum Party with Animals” with a wonderful wildlife display brought to life by flora and fauna.
2024 sees the inaugural chrysanthemum evening viewing event, with the flower show extending its opening hours until 9pm.

Baseball winners parade in Tainan
3 December 2024
Just announced after the historic Taiwan baseball victory in last month’s Premier21 baseball world championship, the winning baseball team will take place in a Tainan parade.
A newly announced December 2024 event in Tainan, the parade will depart from Tainan.
City government building on Nandao Road. The parade route then goes via Jianping, Yonghua and Sialin roads before finishing at the Tainan baseball stadium.
Fans are then allowed to enter the baseball stadium after 3pm to meet their sporting heroes.

Taipei German Christmas Market in New Taipei City Plaza (Christmasland)
6 December to 8 December 2024
A gorgeous German Christmas market in Taipei, this pops up at Taipei Christmasland from Friday 6 December to 8 December 2024 only – chock full of cute Christmas stalls and alpine style wooden huts, this is a great place to do some seasonal shopping in Taipei.
Organised by the German Trade Office for Taipei and now in their fifth year, the Taipei German Christmas market has mulled wine, German beer (prost!) plus a visit from the real Father Christmas – wunderbar! It runs all 3 days from 11am to 8pm.

Taiwan Design Week 2024 at Songshan Cultural Park, Taipei
7 December to 15 December 2024
Songshan Cultural and Creative Park was recently announced as one of the top 5 visited places so far in 2024 with over 6 million visitors. It is also home to the Taiwan Design Museum which hosts the Taiwan Design Week in mid December 2024.
This year’s Taiwan Design Week 2024 has a focus on artificial intelligence (AI) and includes an awards event, networking and workshops plus several talks.
The Golden Pin Design Awards will also be celebrated on 13 December (you can visit the Golden Pin Shop at Songshan Cultural and Creative Park too).

Detective Conan 30th Anniversary Exhibition – Kaohsiung
14 December 2024 to 9 February 2025
Get your tickets to this brand new Detective Conan Taiwan exhibition, set to launch at Kaohsiung Dream Mall from 14 December. This is a must visit Taiwan event for any Detective Conan fans in or around Kaohsiung.
Celebrating 30 years of sleuthing, this official Detective Conan exhibition has life size models of all your favourite characters plus recreations of famous episodes and scenes.
Such is the popularity of Detective Conan in Taiwan, there even used to be a Detective Conan themed 7-Eleven in Taipei (although it has now become a Mofusand 7-Eleven instead).

Yayoi Kusama exhibition at Museum of National Taipei University of Education
21 December 2024 – 4 May 2025
A retrospective exhibition looking back at the works of Yayoi Kusuma from 1951 to 2005, this is set to be one of the best art events in Taipei in 2025.
The Taipei Yayoi Kusama exhibition features over 70 exhibits, paintings. video and installations and visits Taiwan for the very first time.
One of the highlights is set to be a reproduction of her seminal piece “Dots Obsession” which was seen in Taiwan before at the 1998 Taipei Art Biennale.

New Art Aquarium exhibition in Taipei
24 December – 31 May 2025
Hailing from Japan, Tokyo’s famous art aquarium arrives in Taiwan for the very first time, ‘swimming’ to Taipei from 24 December 2024 – this sounds like a very ‘fishy’ Taipei event to us!
This touring exhibition has been seen by over 12 million visitors across the world and it arrives in December 2024 (postponed from the original opening date of 25 November).
A Taipei immersive and sensory experience, the Art Aquarium exhibition started life in Ginza Tokyo and brings to life constantly changing art installations in exotic aquariums with real life-goldfish. Each goldfish tank will have a different theme – this sounds so cool!

Taipei 101 NYE fireworks and event at City Square Hall
31 December 2024
Possibly the most looked forward to Taipei event of the year, Taiwan sees in the New Year (2025) with an epic firework show from the sides of Taipei 101.
There are lots of viewpoints around the city to the Taipei 101 New Years Eve fireworks and one of the best is Taipei City Hall Plaza – or get up very early and camp out at Fireworks Lookout on Elephant Mountain.
Free to view, this Taipei December event on New Year’s Eve will also be broadcast live across the world – this is a bucket list event and amazing to see up-close!

Tamsui 2024 Fireworks, Taipei New City
31 December 2024
Earlier on New Year’s Eve 2024 in Taiwan, there is another Taipei New Year’s Eve fireworks show at Tamsui Fisherman’s Wharf.
The 2024 Tamsui fireworks show starts at 8.25pm (an earlier start time so families can enjoy it) with over 30,000 fireworks lighting up the Tamsui skies. Danjiang Bridge will also be illuminated.
The Tamsui New Years Eve fireworks are set to last 13 minutes and 14 seconds, a reference to the fact the numbers 13 and 14 sound like the phrase for “a lifetime together…” in Mandarin.
For the culmination of the display, sky lanterns will be released in unison with the fireworks.

Kaohsiung New Years Eve 2024 fireworks
31 December 2024
The biggest Taiwan New Year’s Eve firework show after Taipei 101, the Kaohsiung New Year Fireworks at Kaohsiung Dream Mall.
It will be a four minute display and the ‘2024 Dream Mall New Year’s Eve Party’ will be held on Shihdai Blvd.
