Taipei Lunar New Year Festival 2025

29 January 2025

Lunar New Year in Taiwan / Taipei in 2025 begins from 29 January 2025 – Taiwan’s temples come alive with celebrations and many Taiwanese and tourists from overseas escape their home cities to take breaks in Taiwan holiday hotspots like Sun Moon Lake and Alishan.

Most Taiwanese will be taking off the week to celebrate Lunar New Year from 27 January and the preceding weekend.

Incidentally, Chinese New Year and Lunar New Year are effectively the same thing but Lunar New Year is the preferred title outside of China, to reflect that it is celebrated in many countries.

Some major attractions in Taipei and Taiwan may close for a day or two around Lunar New Year so be sure to check individual attractions and site pages before visiting if you plan to visit Taiwan during Lunar New Year.

One of the best places to visit in Taipei during Lunar New Year 2025 is Dihua Street…

Dihua Street Lunar New Year Market

13 to 26 January 2025

The Lunar New Year 2025 in Taiwan brings good fortune for many – one of the best places to experience the Lunar New Year in Taipei is Dihua Street in the Dadaocheng District.

As well as the temples being awash with red lanterns and the constant smoke and bangs of fire-crackers being set off, Dihua Street plays host to a huge Lunar New Year market along its historic main road.

The historic district of Dihua Street and Dadaocheng in Taipei is perhaps most famous for its amazing architecture, traditional Chinese medicine shops and Lunar New Year celebrations – however, in recent years, the area has welcomed an influx of coffee shops and craft beer bars.

January Sales in Taiwan

Many of the major shopping malls in Taipei, Kaohsiung, Taichung and the other major cities will be having big winter sales that kick off from late December and run across January 2025.

Expect big discounts at Taiwan retailers like Eslite and NET fashion stores.

Malls in Xinyi, Taipei

One of the biggest concentration of malls in Taiwan for the best winter sales has to be the Xinyi District, which has massive malls like Taipei 101 Shopping center, Breeze and various branches of Shin Kong Mitsukoshi which also has Taiwan’s flagship Pokémon store.

New Art Aquarium exhibition in Taipei

On until 31 May 2025

Hailing from Japan, Tokyo’s famous art aquarium arrives in Taiwan for the very first time, ‘swimming’ to Taipei from 24 December 2024 – this sounds like a very ‘fishy’ Taipei event to us!

This touring exhibition has been seen by over 12 million visitors across the world and it arrives in December 2024 (postponed from the original opening date of 25 November).

A Taipei immersive and sensory experience, the Art Aquarium exhibition started life in Ginza Tokyo and brings to life constantly changing art installations in exotic aquariums with real life-goldfish. Each goldfish tank will have a different theme – this sounds so cool!
