The latest ‘Taiwan Digital Nomad Visa’ 2025 scheme launched on 1 January 2025, allowing ‘digital nomads’ to stay in Taiwan for up to 180 days, with proof of financial eligibility and proof of work documents.

Some great news for foreign workers who are able to work remotely, those wishing to work in Taiwan on a ‘Taiwan Digital Nomad Visa’ must demonstrate a certain wage level which depends on your age or proof of having obtained a digital nomad visa issued by another country.

Who can apply for the new Taiwan Digital Nomad Visa 2025?
To apply for a 180 day digital nomad visa, you must meet at least one of the following criteria:
- Those who already have a digital nomad visa from another country and can provide documented proof of this.
- Foreigners aged between 20 to 29 who have a proven annual income / salary of at least US$20,000 in the last two years.
- Foreigners aged 30 or above whose salary / income is upwards of US$40,000 equivalent in the last two years.

Please note there is further proof of bank savings needed detailed a little further below.
It should be stated that visitors from these countries are already allowed to stay in Taiwan for up to 90 days already without the need for a visa but are not allowed to work.
So this Taiwan Digital Nomad Visa effectively doubles your maximum length of stay and means you can work for a foreign company whilst in Taiwan.

Additional Criteria
Other factors and thresholds you need to meet in order to apply for a digital nomad visa in Taiwan:
- Only foreign nationals from visa-exempt countries are eligible for the Taiwan digital nomad visitor visa – this includes Australia, Japan, Canada, Germany, Republic of Korea, New Zealand, United Kingdom and the USA – see the full list of eligible visa exempt countries here >
- Proof of bank deposits over the last six months, to the equivalent of $10,000 USD per month (so $60,000 USD) – this might be a big barrier for some.
- Proof of remote work experience – you will need to submit a professional resume / CV including work and education experience plus your current employer’s current contact details (or proof of current contracts if you are a freelancer looking to remotely work out of Taiwan).
- In addition, submit a Description of Intended Activities form >
Passports must also have at least six months validity left when entering Taiwan plus be in possession of a return / exit flight from Taiwan.

Why is there a new nomad visa?
Taiwan is looking to bolster its long-term future and address possible skill gaps – the Government is looking to make it easier to gain permanent residence for high earning and talented workers.
This new visa is just phase one of a longer term strategy to get foreigner workers to consider Taiwan as a potential new home.
Other things to know about the Taiwan Digital Nomad Visa / eligibility criteria
- The visa cannot be extended – it is six months maximum in duration – any overstay will result in big penalties or possible future exclusion from reentering the country.
- Applicants must have proof of full health insurance that covers hospitalisation costs.
Why live in Taiwan for six months?
Given we are a Taiwan travel site called Taiwanderers, we may be a little biased! But Taiwan is a beautiful country with such diverse landscapes, from modern cities to tropical islands, beautiful beaches to forests and mountains – there is something to suit all tastes and budgets.
WiFi and mobile data coverage in Taiwan is excellent, meaning it is easy to work remotely in Taiwan.
The transport infrastructure (particularly the High Speed Rail) is efficient and inexpensive compared to other countries – for instance, it only costs NT$150 (around £3.50 or $4.50 USD) to get from Taoyuan International Airport to downtown Taipei.
Cost of living in Taiwan
According to Numeo, the cost of living in Taiwan is substantially cheaper than living in most western countries and other overseas cities.
For instance, Numeo states that rent in Taiwan compared to London UK is on average is 74% cheaper, and the average Taiwan cost of living is around 55% cheaper than living in London. Restaurant prices are also around 66% cheaper in Taipei than London.
For instance, the Din Tai Fung index in our Taiwan Travel Tips (TTT) Facebook group shows that you can can four times as many xiao long bao at Din Tai Fung in Taipei compared to what you get in London for the same price.
