Taiwan Lantern Festival 2026 in Chiayi
3 to 15 March 2026
The 2026 Taiwan Lantern festival returns for its 37th year, in Chiayi from 3 March to 15 March 2026 held at various locations near Chiayi HSR station including the Southern Branch of the National Palace Museum, Taizi Boulevard, and Chiayi County Government Building Plaza.
After a successful and record breaking 2025 Taiwan Lantern Festival last year in Taoyuan which attracted over 20 million people, this year’s Chiayi 2026 Taiwan Lantern Festival is set to be bigger and better than ever before.

This year’s 2026 Taiwan Lantern Festival theme is “Glow with Taiwan, Light Up Chiayi,” with 16 themed zones and 12 giant “must-see” attractions and installations.
One of most exciting lanterns in 2026 is the “Glow of Alishan” a huge 20 metre plus immersive lantern complete with an epic light and sound show.
Every evening across the Chiayi skyline, a large-scale drone light show will feature dozens of drones followed by a fun fireworks display.

Celebrated after Lunar New Year, the Taiwan Lantern Festival runs from 3 to 15 March 2026 in Chiayi – no tickets or admission fee is required.
We’ve been to the 2024 and 2025 lantern festivals and it was amazing with hundreds of huge lanterns of various shapes and sizes, and all designed so beautifully.

A TEAM TAIWAN Grand Parade and special opening ceremony attended by local and national dignitaries (and hopefully the Taiwan bear tourism mascot!) will take place on 3 March 2026.
The 2026 Taiwan Lantern Festival usually lights up nightly from mid afternoon and runs until late in the evening – check out our lantern festival guide with lots of pictures of previous festivals >
2026 Pingxi Lantern Festival & Mass Release
3 March 2026 in Shifen
We love exploring the Pingxi, especially Shifen waterfall and Houtong Cat Village.
Every year, a mass lantern release takes place along the Pingxi line (usually in Shifen at the Shifen Lantern Release Square and at Pingxi Junior High School).
The 2026 Pingxi Lantern Festival and mass lantern release dates are confirmed as Friday 27 February 2026 (at Pingxi Junior School – now completed) and Tuesday 3 March 2026 (at Shifen Square, near Shifen Waterfall).
The Shifen lantern release is usually the larger of the two events with thousands more lanterns released here, in a purpose built lantern release area).

Here at the Pingxi Lantern Festival 2026, thousands of lanterns are released across both nights and the whole Pingxi sky lights up in unison. You can write messages of good luck, prosperity and wishes on your lanterns before watching them whoosh into the sky.
Please note the Klook 2026 Pingxi Lantern festival tickets have already sold out but you can try your luck on the official site.
P.S. We are aware there are environmental considerations with any lantern releases so please make your own decisions.
Taiwan Baseball Season 2026 / Chinese Professional Baseball League season
Taiwan baseball season starts 28 March 2026 in Taipei
A fun night out, make a home-run to a Taiwan baseball game – the 2026 Taiwan baseball season starts from 28 March 2026, across two seasons (with the second season starting in July 2026).
There are seven Taiwan baseball games in March 2026 including the opening Taiwan baseball game at Taipei dome at 5pm on Saturday 28 March – CITIC Brothers vs Rakuten Momoya.
There are also three Taiwan baseball games on Sunday 29 March 2026 (including Taipei Dome) plus three more Taiwan baseball games on Tuesday 31 March 2026.
Taiwan baseball is suitable for all ages and it is easy to buy baseball tickets online or in person at the baseball stadiums or using the Taiwan convenience store ticket machines in 7-Eleven and FamilyMart – many games are played at the new Taipei Dome in Xinyi.
The Taiwan baseball / CPBL games can usually be seen 6 days a week during baseball season – it is only Monday when there are no baseball games played (and the odd other day).
Enjoy the evening action on and off the field as the stands often erupt into cheers with entertainment and dancing also quite common.

2026 Yanshui Beehive Fireworks Festival
2 and 3 March 2026
Possibly Taiwan’s most explosive event, the 2026 Yanshui Beehive Fireworks Festival is well ‘lit’.
Dating back to the Qing Dynasty and an annual Taiwan event and celebration for over 150 years, the Yanshui Beehive Fireworks Festival has now become one of the largest folk celebrations in the world, and attended by thousands of tourists and thrill-seekers due to the frantic firework element.
Yanshui is a Taiwan fishing port and the festival started off as a blessing to the deity Guan Gong – his likeness is paraded around town on a sedan style chair as fireworks are set off, from beehive style structures.
Note this is one of the more extreme Taiwan festivals and events so make sure you dress appropriately – and also check your travel insurance is up to date!
Below is a video made by our TTT Facebook member Dan Carroll of the 2026 event.
Neimen Song Jiang Battle Ritual 2026
Last week of March 2026 to early April 2026 (exact dates still TBC)
Held in Kaohsiung every March / April, the Neimen Song Jiang Battle Ritual is a sight (and sound!) to behold). Started in 2001, it brings together local temples, community groups and schools who perform folk celebrations and traditional Taiwanese music and drumming.
In recent years, the Neimen Song Jiang Battle Ritual had a combined prize pot of NT$2,000,000 (around £50,000 or $60,000 USD) which lots of groups ‘battled’ to win.
From dancing lions to a sea of drummers, martial arts to musical displays, this is one of the most memorable Kaohsiung events in March 2026.

Tour De Taiwan 2026 cycling race
15 to 19 March 2026
After its 21st anniversary in 2025, the Tour De Taiwan cycling race returns and starts this year’s proceedings in Taipei on 15 March 2026 from outside Taipei City Hall.
Across five days, the Tour De Taiwan 2026 cycling race covers almost 685 kilometers and visits Taipei cities and districts such as Taoyuan, Sun Moon Lake and Taichung before finishing in Kaohsiung on the final day.
Countries represented by teams in the 2026 race include Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, Australia, Japan, Italy and Germany plus many more.
If you happen to be around during this year’s Tour De Taiwan, make sure to cheer on the cyclists from around the world.

Taipei Treasure Hill Light Festival
28 March to 8 May 2026
A short walk from Gongguan MRT Station, Treasure Hill Artist Village is an interesting place to visit (free to walk around too). It is an old settlement with many abandoned houses and areas that have been turned into artists studios (and many residents still live there).
We also feature it in our Gongguan area guide – this festival can easily be combined with the tasty Gongguan night market nearby.

Held every year over several weeks between late March and early May, several artists and creators install new temporary exhibits during the Treasure Hill Light Festival (the village and its artworks can also be visited all year round).
Exploring the theme of light, expect a wide range of installations and ‘illuminating’ pieces – this March 2026 Taipei event is free to attend.
Treasure Hill also features in our weird, wonderful and unusual things to do in Taipei guide >

Taipei Azalea Festival 2026 in Da’an Park
6 March 2026 to 6 April 2026
A green oasis in a very busy city, Daan Park in Taipei is a sprawling open space popular with families and walkers. Every March, it blooms into life by hosting the Taipei Azalea Festival.
Daan Forest Park (大安森林公園) has this annual Taipei flower festival with colorful floral displays of awesome azalea attracting thousands of visitors (and butterflies!).

When we visited one year, the azaleas in Daan Park looked incredible, like a carpet of rainbow colours, plus the trees were strung with thousands of colourful paper cranes.
Dotted around the park were floral floats and flower displays (including a giant robot!) which change each year – special spring musical concerts are often put on at the amphitheater too.
The Taipei Azalea Festival 2026 is free to attend and takes place from 6 March until 6 April 2026 – be sure to combine this with a trip to Yongkang Street nearby, Taipei’s tastiest neighborhood.

Taiwan Cherry Blossom 2026 Hotspots
Late January to April 2026
The best time of the year to see Taiwan cherry blossom ‘spring’ into life is mid February to mid March (although the unpredictable nature of Taiwan’s weather means this is never guaranteed).
We spent late February 2026 in Feniqhu and Chiayi District and Taiwan cherry blossom were already in full bloom and Lohas Park Cherry Blossom in Taipei was just about peaking.
From Taipei to Taichung, Yilan to Yangmingshan National Park, Taiwan is a top spot for cherry blossom chasing and sakura spotting.

If you are in downtown Taipei in early March, one of the best plum blossom spots we’ve always found is the park by Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Hall – expect lots of cherry blossom photographers with tripods, selfie sticks and dogs in prams and pink outfits.
Other Taiwan cherry blossom spots include Beitou, Sun Moon Lake, Tamsui and Alishan.

Over 5,000 roses will bloom into life and this floral festival is easily accessible from Yuanshan MRT Station.
