PX Mart 全聯福利中心
Boasting supermarkets large and small, Taiwan’s biggest supermarket chain is PX Mart with around 1,200 stores as of spring 2025 with over a third of the market.

We like PX Mart as many of the bigger stores are open 24 hours plus they are a great place for travellers to buy fresh fruit and vegetables, plus chilled goods at prices lower than convenience stores – and yes, their soft drink, beer and wine selection is often less expensive too.

A lot of shoppers also rave about the in store bakeries at PX Mart plus some even have deli counters and huge fresh fish and meat sections.
PX Mart 全聯福利中心 Fun Fact
PX Mart once spent NT$200 million licensing and producing Marvel tie-in products to give away to shoppers. However, the tiny size and poor quality of the Marvel figures led to a massive backlash on social media and many were recalled. This sounds more ‘poor’ than Thor!

7-Eleven Taiwan
Regular readers of Taiwanderers will know we are rather addicted to visiting the famous Taiwan themed 7-Elevens in Taipei and Kaohsiung, plus will often indulge with a pint of local beer at Taiwan 7-Eleven bars after a long day of exploring.
With over 7,000 7-Elevens in Taiwan, it is the country’s largest convenience store chain (and has the fifth highest number of 7-Elevens in the world, after Japan, Thailand, USA and South Korea).

In 1979, Taiwan’s first 7-Eleven opened in the Zhongshan district of Taipei – it is also usually the best place to get cool 3D EasyCards and iCash cards.
From the quality of ready meals to the special character themed 7-Elevens (plus all the exclusive 7-Eleven merchandise and their own character, Open Chan), Taiwan 7-Eleven will always be tops for us.

We like the convenience of 7-Eleven given there is practically one on every corner but be aware that for some items, they are usually 10% to 25% more expensive than say PX Mart or Carrefour.
7-Eleven Taiwan Fun Fact
Did you know the highest 7-Eleven in Taiwan can be found in Alishan National Forest Park Recreation Area? Such is the elevation and high air pressure, all of the crisp and noodle packets swell up like they are going to pop. See more Alishan 7-Eleven photos >

Carrefour Taiwan 家樂福
We learned of people’s love for Carrefour Taiwan from various posts in our Taiwan Travel Tips (TTT) Facebook group. It is a superb supermarket for cheap groceries plus tasty Taiwan souvenirs like pineapple cake and Taiwanese tea.
The larger hypermarkets even sell luggage, homeware and electronics (so buy a big suitcase and pop it all in)!

As of March 2025, there are 311 Carrefour Taiwan stores – some of these are smaller express style stores whilst some are huge 24 hour hypermarkets, like Carrefour Ximending.
Amazingly, almost half of the Taiwan Carrefours are open 24 hours a day. There are 149 Carrefour Taiwan stores that are open 24 hours, making it a great place for late night bites for last minute souvenir shopping on the way to the airport!

Carrefour arrived in Taiwan in 1987 and around the world, there are over 14,000 Carrefour stores in over 40 countries.

Fun Carrefour Taiwan 家樂福 Fact
Carrefour Taiwan’s parent company Uni-President also owns the franchise for 7-Eleven Taiwan, Starbucks Taiwan and the Taiwan baseball team Uni-President 7-Eleven Lions!

FamilyMart Taiwan
The second biggest Taiwan convenience store chain after 7-Eleven, the familiar green, white and blue branding of FamilyMart Taiwan greet you on most streets. As of March 2025, there are 4,300 FamilyMart Taiwan stores.

We like FamilyMart not only for their 24 hour stores but also their hot counter selection like tea eggs, oden and warm bao buns.
Their fresh food range is also a favourite of ours, seriously, the Taiwan FamilyMart pasta selection is delicious and inexpensive too.

FamilyMart also has its own brand of food and snacks – their potato chip range is particularly good.
FamilyMart Taiwan has FamiPort / FamiTicket machines in most stores where you can purchase Taiwan tourism bus tickets like Chiayi to Alishan bus tickets, or certain CPBL Taiwan baseball team tickets.

HiLife 萊爾富
Taiwan’s very own convenience store, HiLife is a local version of 7-Eleven and FamilyMart – the bright pink and red heart branding is hard to miss!

As of early 2025, there are around 1,600 HiLife Taiwan stores, often in high footfall locations – their very first store opened in 1988 along Dihua Street in Taipei.
HiLife is a great store for all your usual hot foods, drinks and snacks but we often find their chilled and fresh selections a little lacking compared to say FamilyMart or PX Mart.

HiLife 萊爾富 Fun Fact
The Taipei Dihua Street branch of Hi-Life is a themed store complete with characters from Jimmy Liao’s When the Moon Forgot children’s book. You can also see ‘Jimmy’s Moon Bus’ in Xinyi.

Simple Mart 美廉社
Taiwan’s supermarket chain Simple Mart has 798 stores in Taiwan as of March 2025 and is usually seen in more rural areas and smaller townships.
Even though tourists in the bigger Taiwan cities like Kaohsiung and Taichung may not see it so much, Simple Mart is actually the second biggest Taiwan supermarket chain.
It focuses on essential items like snacks, drinks and toiletries, and are usually found on side-streets where rents are lower. Simplemart in its current form has been around since 2006 and its stores are usually quite small.
Simple Mart 美廉社Fun Fact
The 800th SimpleMart store opened in 2021 (which means some must have closed down since then) and they currently have almost 3 million loyalty card members.
Other Taiwan Supermarkets and Convenience Stores
Two of the other famous stores are:
Taiwan Costco
We haven’t been to one in Taiwan yet as you need a membership card and there are only around 15 branches of Taiwan CostCo.

OK Mart Taiwan
There are 800 OK Marts across Taiwan BUT we haven’t been to one yet – we will rectify this on our next trip!
