Arriving at Jianguo Jade Market and Holiday Flower Market
Taipei’s most vibrant weekend market, Jianguo is split into several sections, all of which are covered by the overpass overhead – so this is a great thing to do in Taipei when it is raining on a Saturday or Sunday.
It is easy to spot when you first arrive as there is a huge neon sign above the entrance saying Jianguo Holiday Flower Market.

Note if you are arriving from Daan Park MRT, you have to walk through the flower market first to get to the Jianguo jade market at the end.
It isn’t just gems and jewelry at the market – the distinct sections include flowers, ceramics stalls, live fish and aquatics stalls, vintage furniture and much more.

And don’t worry if you are travelling light as there are some smaller gifts and souvenirs too. We bought lots of Studio Ghibli’s My Neighbour Totoro figures here, which are sold in huge quantities (as they can be used in terrariums – but they look better on our mantelpiece!).
Incidentally, when we last visited, there weren’t that many tourists and it was mainly local Taiwanese shoppers so it felt like an authentic shopping experience.

Stalls at Jianguo Jade Market
There are around 700 stalls at the market – if we had to estimate, we’d say it was about a third jewelery stores and the rest a mix of flowers, furniture and flea market type stalls.
The Jianguo Jade Market jewellery section in particular was fascinating to watch – it has dozens and dozens of gem sellers each with their own table, and so many jewels to enjoy.

We were sadly not in the market for any jade or necklaces but it was incredible to witness such a bustling market with so many colourful pieces of jewellery, sparkling silver and antique goods.
This is also one of the best places in Taipei to take home a Buddhist charm or bracelet with religious motifs. Based on our own observations, many jewelry stores didn’t seem to have prices or $TWD signs so you may need to negotiate or bargain for a good price.

Holiday Flower Market
The biggest section beneath the underpass was Taipei’s Holiday Flower Market, where locals come to buy floral displays for their homes or festivities.

Here you can buy all kinds of flora and fauna, especially cute cacti and lots of terrarium bowls and miniature gardenscapes (many of which you can design yourselves). This is also an excellent place for beautiful bonsai plants in Taipei plus bulbs (of the floral variety).
Along the way, there is also a treasure trove of other stalls and kiosks from homeware and DIY goods to cute Kawaii style characters.

Artists Corner
One way to support local and incredibly talented artists at the market is by visiting the Artist Corner, also underneath the underpass and right next to Jianguo Jade Market.
Here you will find lots of original paintings and hand-made items, some of which are made by deaf or blind artists.

All of their artworks are on display across dozens of stalls and many have handwritten signs explaining about their creative abilities and how they learned to paint.
Usually a lot quieter than the accompanying jade or flower market, the Artists Corner is open every weekend.
Taiwan dogs in prams
As a random aside, we love seeing all the local residents with their dogs in prams and push-chairs, lovingly cherished by their owners – from Keelung Night Market to Dihua Street, dogs are being driven in trolleys (and it seems to be a mix of both the elderly and young couples).
Given all the space and rooftop covering, this appears to be one of the most popular places for locals to take their dogs in prams to at the weekends.
