Pineapple cake poll / how we found the best Taiwan Pineapple Cake
Obviously best is very ‘subjective’ as is taste – so whilst this isn’t a scientific survey, it is a general indicator of people’s favourite pineapple cakes and most of all, just a BIT OF FUN!
We asked our 60,000+ Taiwan Travel Tips Facebook group members over a couple of posts what their favourite ones were – we didn’t put it in a poll as such but suggested some we’d heard of plus allowed individuals to nominate their own personal favourites.

This all came about after I (Neil) confessed that I’d never been a massive fan of pineapple cake in Taiwan. Whilst I’ll try (and enjoy!) most Taiwanese foods (including stinky tofu), I’d never previously liked pineapple cake – I know, I know…
Whilst we’re most recently back in Taiwan in early 2025, I wanted to try again to see if my tastes have changed – but which pineapple cake would the group recommend?
A popular Taiwan souvenir to bring home, pineapple cake is light to carry so we wanted to know what to stock up on…

Pineapple Cake Posts
We ran the non scientific survey in January and you can view the post for yourself here – we’ll obviously keep back the post announcing the ‘best’ Taiwan pineapple cake in the section below.

Along the way, we learned a few interesting things including why it is best NOT to use a pineapple emoji on social posts (to some people, it means something VERY VERY different…)

And the winning / best Taiwan Pineapple Cake is
The winner of our Taiwanderers pineapple cake poll winner is….
Drum roll please – and what better way to display the results than a pineapple cake pie-chart!?

ChiaTe was the winner with over a quarter of the votes (28%) followed by Pan’s Cake (22%), narrowly pushing Sunny Hills (18%) into third place.
We also had a lot of single votes for a wide variety of pineapple cakes which we’ll include below in a separate section.

ChiaTe has been around since 1975 and one of the best known Taiwan pineapple cakes – so we know this may skew the results a little against smaller bakeries as this one is so well known.
A lot of people mentioned how much they like pineapple cakes with egg yolk too – boba pineapple was recommended several times too.

ChiaTe – not everyone is a fan
Some of the individual ChiaTe comments varied quite a bit from “Chia Te just tried so yummy and buttery” to the less positive “Chiate so overrated.” or “ChiaTe big no no, overhype n sour.”

So we’d recommend you take this survey with a pinch of salt (or pineapple!) and try ChiaTe along with as many other pineapple cakes you can get your hands on. Unwrap, eat, enjoy, repeat…

Where can you buy ChiaTe?
Incidentally, you can buy ChiaTe pineapple cakes in Taipei at the ChiaTe Bakery store in Songshan District (map), open from 8.30am to 8.30pm daily except public holidays like Lunar New Year.
If you visit when it is closed like we did, the 7-Eleven (map) a few meters away literally has hundreds of boxes of ChiaTe including the famous ChiaTe Nougat / Green Onion Crackers.

ChiaTe can also be found at Taoyuan Airport and in selected convenience stores like FamilyMart and 7-Eleven.
Did you know there is even a ChiaTe pineapple cake delivery service available to your hotel? Book it here through Klook, over 30k pineapple cakes have been sold >
Some of the other comments for other pineapple cake brands included:
Pan’s Cake
“Pan’s Cake – pineapple tart with egg yolk is yummy.”
“Pan’s is the best, imo! Not the ones from the store, but the fresh ones from the original Pans bakery – the ones without individual packaging. They’re so good!”
Sunny Hills
“We like Sunny Hills because they use only pineapples (no winter melon) in their fillings”.
“I do really like the ones from Sunny Hills because they taste more like pineapples and are more tart, closer to some that were custom-made for us using a native variety of pineapple.”

Our verdict on ChiaTe Pineapple Cake
As promised, we went out and bought the winning ‘ChiaTe’ pineapple cakes – their Taipei bakery store close to our hotel was shut for Lunar New Year when we visited.
Instead the bakery had signs pointing us to the nearest 7-Eleven; the store was literally packed with hundreds of ChiaTe boxes!
We really enjoyed the ChiaTe pineapple cakes and I am a total convert now. I like them because they aren’t overly sweet or buttery, nor too dry. And the bite size servings are just about right given how rich they are. I am now pro pineapple cake!
