What is Taiwan’s caramel milk pudding?
A quick to eat dessert that was first manufactured in the late 1970s, everytime we mention caramel pudding in our Taiwan Travel Tips (TTT) Facebook group, a lot of our local members say it is like a taste of childhood to them.
Incidentally, the other Taiwan snack that elicits a similar retro response is the Kuai Kuai corn snack coconut butter puffs in the green packet.

The Taiwan caramel egg pudding 統一大布丁 is similar in texture to the European creme caramel but much MUCH sweeter.
It also comes in two standard sizes – a petite pot for smaller appetites and the larger size. We know which one we always go for…

How much does Caramel Milk Pudding cost?
At the time of writing, the cheapest caramel egg pudding we’ve found is in Carrefour Taiwan – a small pudding costs NT$10 when bought as a pack of 3 (so NT$30 for the three pack).
This is much cheaper than buying them individually in Taiwan 7-Eleven where a small individual pudding costs around NT$20.

Other Taiwan Caramel Egg Pudding spin-offs
So popular and embedded is the pudding in the national psyche, we’ve seen lots of other caramel egg custard pudding flavoured food-stuffs. These include:
Caramel Pudding Sweets and Jellies
A popular treat during Lunar New Year, these taste just like the actual pudding but are much smaller (and possibly even cuter than the original).
During the Lunar New celebrations along Dihua Street, we spotted two types of caramel sweets – one was a tiny jelly version of the pudding whilst the other a much chewier candy version.

Caramel Milk Dessert Ice-Cream
Yep, in the freezer section of many a FamilyMart and 7-Eleven, we spied this rather n-’ice’ tribute to the pudding. It ‘sucks’ but in a good way!

Mister Donut x Caramel Milk Pudding
Japan’s famous Mister Donut (‘Misdo’) chain is big in Taiwan with dozens of branches, particularly in the Underground MRT stations.
Mister Donut Taiwan offers all the usual Japan favourites like match pon de ring donuts but they also have localised versions like a caramel egg pudding donut 統一大布丁 and Bugcat Capoo donuts!

Other Taiwan Caramel Egg Pudding souvenirs
And it isn’t just in the food aisle that you’ll find this classic Taiwan dessert. You can even take it home in plastic form as a unique Taiwan souvenir.
So far, we’ve spotted:
Pudding iCash card
There are lots of cool EasyCard and iCash card designs – many of Taiwan’s classic products have been recreated in cash card form.

There are several dessert design iCash cards like this caramel custard pudding cashcard – alas it doesn’t wobble like the real thing!

Pudding Keyring
And finally, we spotted this Taiwan caramel egg pudding keyring in one of the numerous Ximending gift-shops – it was a rainy day in Ximending so we trawled all the stores looking for unusual souvenirs; and we hit the jackpot!

The keyring cost NT$100, which is the cost of 10 small actual puddings (but the keyring likely has less calories).
