Ningxia Night Market in Taipei

One of the best things to do in Taipei at night, Ningxia Night Market (寧夏夜市) is a little more under the tourist radar than Shilin Night Market and Raohe Night Market. It is full of families, couples and friends (especially on the weekends) who like to feast and play fairground games.

Ningxia Night Market opening hours

Ningxia Night Market (寧夏夜市) is open from around 5pm until 1am daily. The main night market street closes to traffic from around 4pm and reopens after in the early hours.

In the daytime, Ningxia Road is a busy thoroughfare with traffic. If you aren’t able to get to the area at night, you can still eat in lots of restaurants along either side of the street.

These include the renowned Piaoxiang Beef Noodles, plus several oyster omelet outlets (try saying that after a few Taiwan Classic Beers).

We last visited Ningxia Night Market in early 2024 and it is still one of the best (and most authentic) night markets in Taipei.

How to get to Ningxia Night Market

Ningxia Night Market is a 2 minute walk from Zhongshan Station exit 5, served by the green Songshan Xindian line or the red Tamsui – Xinyi Line.

Shuanglian Station exit 1 is also a very short stroll to the market – it is one of the most easily accessible night markets in Taipei.

Ningxia Night Market in Taipei

It is also a short walk from Dihua Street, one of Taiwan’s oldest streets known for its Chinese herbal medicine shops, tranquil temples and Lunar New Year celebrations.

We’d recommend visiting Dihua Street and Dadaocheng Wharf for sunset / dusk then making the trip over to the night market.

Dihua Street to Ningxia Road is about a 10 minute walk – Ningxia Night Market is also walkable from Beimen MRT and Taipei Main Station.

Check Google Maps or the official Go! Taipei Metro app to see which is the quickest and best route for you.

The best time to visit Ningxia Night Market

As one of Taipei’s best night markets, Ningxia Night Market is often busy especially at weekends and peak times but well worth it.

Given its close layout and main lane of stalls that are only a couple of metres apart, we personally found this the most claustrophobic of all the night markets as queues for the more popular stalls can snake down this one lane.

If you prefer to eat and browse without crowds, visit Ningxia just after opening between 5pm and 6.30pm or after 10pm. Friday night and the weekends are the busiest.

We’ve also done Taipei day trips (visiting places like Jiufen and Yehliu Geopark) where the buses drop you off back in Taipei at Ningxia Night Market so it gets busy and bustling mid evening any day of the week.

Arriving at the market / history of Ningxia Night Market

Ningxia Night Market has become incredibly popular over the years, especially with overseas tourists as it has been featured on numerous foodie TV programmes and travel books.

It has a few famous food stalls that feature in several guides including Liu Yu Zi (famous for its deep-fried taro balls and cake) and the Yuen Huan Pien Oyster Omelette and Circle Oyster A restaurants, next to the market (handily open at lunch too).

The Ningxia Night Market is around 300 metres in length with two main lanes of stalls and food kiosks, plus lots of games and activities like ring toss and balloon popping.

Ningxia Market has been around in various forms since the early 1900s, and moved spots several times before settling in its current location a couple of decades ago.

Food at Ningxia Night Market in Taiwan

There are a couple of hundred food stalls at Ningxia Night Market so we can’t mention everyone in great detail – but suffice to say you will not go hungry!

We’ve been to Ningxia Night Market several times and it’s one of our favourites, along with Raohe Night Market.

Because it is so confined in the main stall area, it is atmospheric and full of life; your nose also soon fills full of wonderful wafts of food like the blowtorch cubed steak stalls (not so much the stinky tofu – although it tastes better than it smells).

One thing we observed – given how tight the main aisle is in between all the street food stalls, there is kind of a queuing etiquette where the first three or four customers queue up in front of the stall and then anyone behind that must queue down the side.

Some stalls even have queue signs like the below:

Some of the food stalls at Ningxia Night Market include:

Stinky Tofu

Just follow your nose! This is not for everyone but you should try fermented stinky tofu at least one time during your trip.

Cubed steak

The smell of diced steak pieces being grilled or cooked by blowtorches wafts through Ningxia and is a common sight and smell – it tastes amazing too.

Fried ice-cream & coriander peanut ice-cream roll

Yep, one of the n-’ice’-est things to try is deep fried ice-cream skewers.

Failing that, you can also enjoy the traditional Taiwanese ice-cream rolls served with crumbled peanuts and fresh coriander. This might be our favorite dessert at the night market.

Oyster Omelets

There are a couple of oyster omelet stalls that pop up in the market with small eating areas but the more famous oyster omelet restaurants can be found on the side, and are usually open from early morning (Like Circle Oyster A and Yuen Huan Pien).

Deep fried balls of fun in various flavours like taro – the most famous taro ball street-food stall at Ningxia is Liu Yu Zi. Expect to pay upwards of $NT50 per small portion and NT$80 for a large portion.

Er Dai Goose

Goose meat is seen as a speciality in Taipei and the Er Dai Goose stall serves up goose meat, innards and other parts in a rich goose blood broth. Their main dishes cost between NT$40 and NT$110.

Sweetcorn

One of the best vegetarian options at Ningxia night market is the stall selling sweetcorn kernels mixed with cheese.

German pork feet

Yep, it isn’t Taiwanese as such but the BBQ roast feet proved quite popular, available with various sauces like honey mustard, tartar and spicy Thai. Prices range from NT$100 to NT$340.

Deep fried mushrooms

Alas the Ningxia Night Market oyster mushroom stalls don’t have singing stall holders who croon along to Celine Dion like they do at Raohe Night Market, but they do deliver damn fine fried mushrooms.

Other things to see at the market (other than food)

95% of the stalls at Ningxia night market are seriously good street food but there are also lots of carnival style games and fairground attractions which are always fun to take part in or watch others.

arcade games Ningxia Night Market in Taipei

Popular games include getting basketballs in hoops, bursting balloons with darts plus hoopla, where you can win prizes by throwing rings over toys (or beer and wine bottles for ‘big kids’). The traditional Taiwanese marble pinball machines can also be found in great numbers here.

arcade funfair toy games Ningxia Night Market in Taipei

If you are a games fan, there are more carnival games here at Ningxia than Raohe Night Market or Huaxi but not as many as Shilin Night Market.

Many local blind / injured street performers (or students trying to raise tuition fees) also sing and play music in the crowds – this is a very regular occurrence in all of Taipei’s night markets.

Other practical tips and things to know about Ningxia Night Market

  • Ningxia Night Market is closed to traffic from around 4.30pm to approximately 1am.
  • Crime is low in Taiwan compared to other countries but it can be very busy very quickly so keep an eye on your belongings.
  • If the queue is big and it isn’t all western tourists, it is likely a very good stall!
  • Some Ningxia Night Market food stalls offer seating but not all so you may need to walk and eat.
  • There are several convenience stores along Ningxia Road if you need any soft drinks or similar including 7-Eleven.
  • You’ll usually find bins at either end of the market – otherwise you can sometimes return your wrappers and rubbish to the stall you bought it from.
