Arriving at the Sumikko Gurashi 7-Eleven Store

A little bit of Japanese Kawaii in Tokyo, these joyful Japanese cartoon characters appear all throughout this 7-11, including on the store-front.

A common theme is the characters holding or eating a smiling piece of toast (we aren’t sure we’d be smiling if someone was chewing on us)!

The Sumikko Gurashi 7-Eleven is simple to spot as the front is covered in characters – there is even a Sumikko Gurashi sign where the 7-Eleven logo unusually goes.

There is even a huge ceiling panel outside all lit up, featuring Penguin, Ebifurai no Shippo, Neko and Shirokuma. All of them are eating food like melon bread or takoyaki fish. It is themed so well, you kind of forget it is a normal 7-Eleven Taiwan convenience store.

Sumikko Gurashi Theming

Literally every wall inside this Sumikko Gurashi 7-Eleven is covered in cute cartoon characters eating food with faces.

For instance, above the chiller cabinets / fridges, Neko, Shirokuma, Tonkatsu, Tokage and Penguin are all dressed in chef’s hats and holding kitchen utensils and baking ingredients – appropriately, it looks ‘chef’s kiss’ and very cool.

And please don’t expect Shirokuma the Polar Bear to be in the freezer section as he is actually afraid of the cold!

Look up at the ceiling and you’ll see huge characters lit up in the roof-space including Minikko and a huge melon pan bread – don’t worry if it is making you hungry as there are loads of 7-Eleven bakery products in store.

Our favourite bit was the wall depicting Sumikko Gurashi as different food types like polar bear bread, Tonkatsu bread and Zatto toast.

7-Eleven Coffee and Cafe Area

This has to be one of the unique 7-Elevens in Taiwan. The seating area and cafe is almost like a Sumikko Gurashi gathering with several themed tables and chairs (each with a character on) plus several Sumikko Gurashi merchandise cabinets (more on this later).

Several of the tables are toast shaped and have a hollow inside, with Sumikko Gurashi characters and collectibles inside.

One thing we observed is that since our first visit in 2023, the Sumikko Gurashi 7-Eleven on our return visit in spring 2024 was looking a bit forlorn and tattered – it is still worth a visit but maybe some maintenance is needed.

A lot of the more expensive merchandise was also covered in a thick layer of dust – urgh.

This is one of the few themed 7-Elevens in Taipei where we didn’t stop for coffee so we aren’t sure if there are Sumikko Gurashi 7 11 coffee cups and sleeves like we experienced at the Mofusand, Ultraman and Hello Kitty 7-Eleven stores. We didn’t see anyone drinking from one either – but the seating area was full
