Although there may not be as many themed cafes in Taiwan as say Japan, there are certainly a few cute and cartoon cafes plus fun themed restaurants in Taiwan to enjoy.
From the poo-themed Modern Toilet restaurant to the capybara cafe in Taipei, Taiwan’s themed cafes are a fun thing to do with children (or ‘big kids’ like ourselves).

1. Modern Toilet, Taipei (2 branches)
Make some Modern Toilet time in Taipei and try some ‘cr@p’ food (but in a good way)!
Modern Toilet is a bathroom themed chain restaurant that has branches in Ximending and Shilin.
The themed restaurant interior is kitted out like an interior of a bathroom, with wall tiles decorated with poo shaped cartoon characters.
The acrylic toilet seats at Modern Toilet act as dining chairs, with each one uniquely decorated with designs such as flowers, glitter and seashells.
The food served here is a mix of Italian and Asian cuisine – and surprisingly, it isn’t too sh*t (although it literally looks like it might be).
For the ultimate Instagrammable ice-cream, try the chocolate ice-cream served in a toilet bowl.

2. Godzilla cafe (Kaiju Tea Shop / Guaishou Chi Tea) in Kaohsiung
This has to be one of the most ‘roarsome’ things to do in Kaohsiung!
Hidden away in the backstreets trendy Yancheng district, Kaohsiung’s Godzilla cafe AKA Kaiju Tea Shop is a monster of a tea shop, with Godzilla galore merchandise, across two floors.
As you’d expect from this Taiwan themed cafe in Kaohsiung, all of the food and drink is a nod to Godzilla, from the ‘Godzilla’ monster foam on the cappuccinos to the gorgeous Godzilla pancakes available in several flavours.
Browse hundreds of Godzilla statues as you wait for your drinks to be made – there is also a small museum upstairs. If you can, try to get a seat at the counter to get up close with giant Godzilla heads.
Address: Kaiju Tea Shop / Guaishou Chi Tea, No. 9號, Lane 121, Dazhi Rd, Yancheng District, Kaohsiung City.

3. Bugcat Capoo Foam Cat Cafes in Taichung
There are now two ‘purrfect’ Bugcat Capoo themed cafes in Taichung, including a new one at Taichung Station, housed in an old station building.
So whether you are in search of a ‘cat-puccino’ and latte art or some of the cutest kitty gifts in Taichung, this is the place to be.
Bugcat Capoo (貓貓蟲咖波) is one of the most popular Taiwan cartoon characters, a cute cross between a blue cat and a bug, created by Taiwan illustrator Yara (亞拉).
Bugcat Capoo has over 1.6 million followers on Instagram and celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2024. Such is Bugcat Capoo’s popularity, there are even regular pop-up exhibitions plus a permanent themed Bugcat Capoo 7-Eleven in Taipei.

4. Capybara Knight AKA – Capybara Cafe in Taipei
Taipei’s first capybara cafe, Capybara Knight (水豚騎士) is a cute Taiwan animal cafe that takes its cuteness to another level.
Hidden away in the back-streets of Tucheng District, Capybara Knight is home to Ba La the female capybara and Ga Bi (plus several rabbits, ducks and a cat – it is quite the menagerie!)
We visited Capybara Knight, Taipei’s most famous capybara cafe in late 2024 to see what all the fuss was about.
As we aren’t generally fans of animal cafes (other than cat ones), we weren’t too sure what to expect. However we are glad to report the animals were free to roam outside and seemed very happy – we’re also including it in this guide as the cafe was full of capybara themed decorations and gifts.
From prices to the capybara themed menu, here is our guide to visiting the Capybara Knight >
Address: Capybara Knight, No. 18號, Alley 2, Lane 61, Yuanlin Street, Tucheng District, New Taipei City

5. The world’s first cat cafe – Kitten Coffee Garden in Taiwan
Taiwan’s first cat cafe Kitten Coffee Garden is one of the most ‘purr-fect’ things to do in Taipei – ‘fur’ real. It also holds the distinction of being the world’s oldest / first cat cafe that is still open today.
Opened in 1998 and currently located in Shilin, Taipei’s Kitten Coffee Garden is a cute coffee shop home to 13 cute cats and two adorable dogs.
We visited Kitten Garden Coffee (also known as ‘Cafe Cats and Dogs’) in early 2025 and loved our experience. It felt very homely inside and it was nice to see the cafe’s cats and dogs eating and playing together – try to time your visit with the cat feeding time too!
From admission / drink prices to how to get to the cafe, here is our guide to the world’s oldest cat cafe – Kitten Coffee Garden (article coming soon) >
Address: 111, Taipei City, Shilin District, Fuhua Road, 129號1樓
6. Taiwan Maid Cafes
Maid in Taiwan! Ask anyone about what first comes to mind when mentioning unusual Japanese cafes and it is likely they’ll say Maid Cafes – did you also know there are quite a few maid cafes in Taiwan (especially in Taipei).
Picture is Yumemi Maid Cafe in Longquan (Taipei) – eat themed food whilst the maids sing, dance and draw cartoon characters.
There are also several Taiwan maid cafes in Taipei’s Wanhua and Zhongzhen districts including Kokorolia 心物語 Maid Café, Moe Hime Maid Cafe and Tukuyomi Maid Cafe.
You can also indulge at a Taiwan maid cafe in Taichung at Suehiro-cho maid cafe.

7. Old Taiwan Original Cuisine Restaurant / 新台灣原味懷舊餐廳 高雄館- Railway Themed diner in Kaohsiung
A veritable vintage treat and full of tasty Taiwan treats like scallion pancakes and herbal chicken soup, Old Taiwan is a railway themed restaurant chock full of nostalgic items from the 1930s to 1970s including retro robots and classic Taiwan toys.
Sit down in an old Taiwan railway carriage and enjoy old school food and modern day prices as you explore the ‘railway station’. We think combining the Godzilla cafe in Yancheng with Old Taiwan makes for a top themed restaurant Kaohsiung day out.
Please note there is a minimum spend of NT$300 per person plus they have cheaper set meals at lunchtimes.

8. Anime Cafe at Syntrend Creative Park
OK, so this might be the most overly themed cafe in Taiwan but there are actually two anime themed cafes in Taipei’s Syntrend Creative Park.
Syntrend is Taipei’s trendiest shopping mall and amongst its 13 floors of shopping and services, there is the Anime Cafe on level 6 of the mall plus the themed Kirabase Taiwan cafe on the next floor (more on this in a moment).
The Anime Cafe is more of a casual coffee shop where you browse Manga and Anime comics and enjoy food and drink.
Taiwanderers Tip – a couple of minute’s walk from Syntrend brings you to Taipei’s Huashan 1914 Creative Park, which is Taipei’s best place for pop-ups including themed cafes (in the past , they’ve had everything from Squid Game to Snoopy pop-ups plus a Hello Kitty pop-up cafe – please note these change often).
Address: Syntrend, No. 2號, Section 3, Civic Blvd, Zhongzheng District, Taipei City

9. Kirabase Taiwan
A chain of themed cafes across Taipei, there are currently four themed Kirabase cafes located in Xinyi, Syntrend Mall, Zhongzheng and Ximen.
Akin to Japanese style cafes in Taiwan, these are quite similar to maid cafes with servers wearing costumes – the cafes often host different anime character pop-ups and no photography is allowed in the store.
Taking great inspiration from Akihabara in Japan, you’ll be served by ‘Star idol’ waitresses and an interactive serving experience where you sing songs and play games.
Visit the official Kirabase website here >
10. Hide and Seek Cat Cafe, Houtong Cat Village
An easy day trip from Taipei and located along the Pingxi Line, Houtong is Taiwan’s famous cat village and home to various cat themed shops and cafes – even Houtong train station has a cat-shaped passenger bridge, ‘fur’ real!
Home to dozens of cats and kitties, Houtong Cat Village is a riverside town in the Ruifang valley that has direct trains from Taipei Main Station (and also easily accessible from Jiufen).
There used to be a lot of cat themed cats in Houtong but many closed after COVID but there are still a handful left including our favourite, Hide & Seek Cafe – they have the BIGGEST cat we’ve ever seen who runs about the place, plus cute cat themed food and drink.
Hide and Seek cafe serves up adorable themed treats like cat puffs (very popular when we visited), cat shaped mocha smoothies, cat paw cake and cat pineapple cake.
We ordered a latte coffee for 120 TWD and an Americano for 90 TWD (the latter came in a cat shaped cup and saucer).
Address: Hide and Seek Cafe, No. 223號, Chailiao Road, Ruifang District, New Taipei City

11. Themed 7-Eleven Taiwan Cafes
Did you know there are over 100 themed 7-Elevens in Taiwan – we love these themed cafes and 7-Elevens so much we’ve written a detailed guide to the best themed 7-Elevens in Taipei.
As well as the famous Hello Kitty 7-Elevens in Taipei (both with cute cafe areas), you’ll also find a Snoopy themed 7-Eleven with a basement seating area, a Mofusand 7-Eleven, Pokemon 7-Eleven and even this Coca-Cola themed 7-Eleven upstairs cafe.
Did you also know Taiwan is home to the world’s only Disney / Mickey Mouse themed 7-Eleven and City Cafe? This House of Mouse has themed tables and chairs plus lots of Disney merchandise
Outside of Taipei, you’ll find other themed 7-Elevens with cartoon character seating areas like this Kaohsiung Pokemon.
Please note the Taiwan Hello Kitty themed cafes have closed down – the 7-Eleven Hello Kitty cafes are the only permanent ones open as of January 2025.
The Rilakkuma Cafe Taipei is also permanently closed.
Taiwan’s new Sanrio themed train
Taiwan used to have a Disney themed train complete with a Chip and Dale themed restaurant carriage but it sadly stopped service in December 2024 – however, you can still read about it here and see our pictures >
A new Taiwan train with Sanrio and Hello Kitty theming was announced in early 2025 – we hope to ride this new Sanrio train soon!
